Patient plays clarinet during brain surgery with instant results! ❤️
Denise Bacon, 65, underwent an operation to relieve her Parkinson’s disease, during which surgeons sent electrical impulses into the areas of the brain responsible for movement.
The procedure, known as deep brain stimulation, was led by Professor Keyoumars Ashkan from King’s College Hospital in London.
A keen clarinetist, Bacon used to play in the East Grinstead Concert Band, but had to stop during lockdown due to the effects of the disease, which she had been diagnosed with in 2014. She was encouraged to play the instrument throughout, to test the procedure.
Following the brain stimulation, Bacon’s fingers were instantly able to move much faster and with more ease on the instrument.
