The term, ‘classic rock’, was originally coined to describe a specific radio format that comprised rock music mainly from the 1970s. After a while, this term also went on to include rock music from the ’60s and even the ’50s. In the present day context, classic rock encompasses even grunge, punk, and ’80s hair bands.

In order to understand the term classic rock, let’s first look at the word, ‘classic’. The most significant aspect of the word is that it is used to describe something about which people feel the same as they did in the past. For something to be considered ‘classic’, it has to stand the test of time. So when people listen to classic rock, they feel exactly as they would have if they heard the same piece of music in say the fifties or the sixties.

Understand The Term Classic Rock

To decide if a particular song or album can be regarded as classic rock, put it to the test by asking these questions:

When was it recorded?

Was it a huge hit?

Who was it recorded by?

Is the song or album still available in a record store or online? Can you still hear it on the radio?

An album that is say 10 years old cannot be thought of as classic rock. This is regardless of whether it was a big hit or whether it was recorded by a famous band. At the same time, just by virtue of having been around for the last 40 years doesn’t automatically make a song or album a classic either.

Even if a rock song is your personal favorite, it doesn’t necessarily make it a classic! The song should have been hugely popular and a sure shot hit for it to qualify as a classic.

For an album to be considered as classic, the band that recorded the songs should have been well-known as well. A one hit wonder is unlikely to fall into the category of  a classic.

A particular song may have very popular in 1960, but if you don’t hear it any longer on a  rock station, it does not qualify as a classic. Merely being old does not make a song a classic.
